ATTORNEYS WHO WORK at Boston’s immigration court say an individual who appeared in the courtroom this week tested presumptive positive for COVID-19, although there has been no official announcement.

Susan Roses, a Lynn-based immigration attorney, said on Facebook on Wednesday that she heard Judge Jennifer Mulcahy say that a person who had been in the courtroom had tested positive.

“If Mulcahy hadn’t loudly, and I think purposefully, proclaimed that the courtroom was closed due to a presumed positive case from yesterday, I don’t think any one of us would have known that fact,” Roses said in her Facebook post.

Other attorneys say they have independently heard about an individual testing positive. One, who asked to remain anonymous, said an attorney who was in the courtroom on Tuesday tested positive.

The court, which is run by the Justice Department’s executive office for immigration review, has not responded to requests for comment. Mulcahy could not be reached for comment.

As of Monday, several immigration courts, including Boston’s, stopped holding hearings for immigrants who are not detained, postponing them until at least April 10. But hearings for immigrants who are being detained have continued, with the shackled individuals standing close together as they await their hearings. The immigrants often share the same microphones to hear a translation of the proceedings, according to attorneys who have been in the courtroom the past few days.

“We’re requesting that all detained dockets move to remote hearings,” said Mahsa Khanbabai, director of the New England chapter of the American immigration Lawyers Association. She said it’s important that hearings continue, but remotely – “it’s for the public safety of everyone concerned, including court staff.”
