GOV. CHARLIE BAKER said he and other state officials held a 2 p.m. conference call on Tuesday to discuss the terrorist attacks in Belgium and to deploy a greater law enforcement presence on the T and at Logan Airport.
State officials were responding to explosions at the Brussels airport and at a subway station in central Brussels that killed approximately 30 people and wounded hundreds more. Eight hours after the attacks, a news agency affiliated with the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the bombings.
Baker said the officials on the call had no indication of any imminent threat in the Boston area, but nevertheless stepped up the police presence on the T and at the airport. “The biggest thing you can do is presence,” he said. “We’ve had increased presence for awhile.”
The governor said Massachusetts residents always need to be vigilant about terrorist incidents, but added that he took some comfort in the fact that security officials are constantly sifting through information about potential threats. “There is always dialogue going on between local, state, and federal security officials,” he said, a process that he said has been developed and refined since the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
