House Speaker Robert DeLeo said on Monday said he has received no formal indication that he will be called as a witness in the trial of former Probation commissioner John O’Brien and two of his top aides.
“I have not been told that I will be called,” DeLeo said, referring to the case in federal district court that has riveted attention on Beacon Hill patronage practices. DeLeo’s name is likely to figure prominently in the trial, in part because, as the former chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, he recommended his godson, Brian Mirasolo, for a job at Probation. Mirasolo is the son of a long-time DeLeo aide and is described in the O’Brien indictment as being “not the most qualified candidate.”
The Probation trial is in its early stages and is expected to last two months, so it’s possible that DeLeo hasn’t been notified yet. DeLeo’s name appears on a list of potential witnesses for the defense, which will call witnesses only after the prosecution rests its case.
