Editor, Ipswich Local News

We are seeking a full-time editor to join our award-winning, nonprofit newsroom. The editor will manage all reporting and editing efforts and ensure a steady stream of timely, accurate and compelling stories for our readers, both online and in a weekly print edition.

The ideal candidate knows the area; loves our mission; is a seasoned reporter and editor; and is committed to local news and professional journalistic standards. Experience with a print newspaper is highly desirable.

The editor reports to the executive director.

NOTE: This is a hyper-local newsroom and the editor should plan to live in Ipswich or a nearby community within easy commuting distance. This is a highly-visible role in the town and the editor will need to be in the community regularly.

Compensation: $55,000 – $60,000 depending on experience, plus three weeks’ vacation.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assigning stories to reporters, freelancers and photographers
  • Following up on leads and assigning coverage as needed
  • Reporting and writing stories
  • Editing and publishing stories using WordPress CMS
  • Publishing stories to social media
  • Curating and sending email newsletters
  • Managing submissions from columnists and contributors
  • Ensuring coverage of key town government issues and meetings
  • Working with an external designer on the layout of the weekly paper
  • Hiring reporters, photographers and interns
  • Leading regular meetings with reporting staff
  • Interacting with readers and the public, receiving feedback and listening to concerns
  • Other duties as needed

  • Diplomacy and tact when interacting with the public
  • Ability and willingness to mentor young journalists and interns

Experience: At least three years of experience as a news reporter, and at least one year of experience as an editor. Experience managing teams and reporters is highly desirable.

Flexibility: Our office is in downtown Ipswich on North Main Street; however, our team often works remotely. The editor will be expected to spend the bulk of their time in Ipswich and is expected to work evenings and weekends as needed.
